Is God a Cosmic Cop?
"We’re here for a reason. I believe that reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark." ~Whoopi Goldberg

Make my day…
I was listening to a friend talk about how she used to believe God was nothing more than a cosmic cop. A divine policeman up in the sky watching and waiting for her to screw up so He could write her a ticket. The only benefit to being “good” was just not getting that ticket.
The concept of a loving Father watching her with keen interest in her life, celebrating all the great things about her and lovingly helping her through the not so great things – well… that was just impossible in her mind. A relationship with this cosmic cop – NO WAY!!!
Do you feel that way about God? That He is frowning at you, disappointed with you, angry with you… This feeling of divine disapproval is common, especially for those of us who have suffered abuse by a father figure in our life. As another friend said as she was battling cancer: “I can hear Him now when I die, ‘This is my daughter, in whom I am greatly disappointed…’”
Someone else described her perception of Him as holding a six-shooter pointed at her and sneering, “Make. My. Day.”
These are all beautiful, gentle, giving, incredible women who love God and strive to please Him – and yet they just can’t let God show them who He truly is. They hear sermons about how much He loves them and accepts them, but there is just a wall there that won’t let them take a chance on receiving that love.
Want to know how to really make God’s day? Give Him a chance to show you who He REALLY is!
If you are missing a heart to heart connection with your heavenly Father, I want to encourage you to at least be open to the possibility that He is not a cosmic cop, but is actually tender and kind and good and full of love and approval of you.
That is a starting point – to just be open to the possibility that He has been misrepresented to you and isn’t really that way at all.
“Come close to God, and He will come close to you…” (James 4:8)
Then give Him a chance to reveal Himself to you. A good way to start this is having a conversation with Him. Honestly tell Him what you think of Him. He knows it anyway. Verbalizing your feelings gets it out there on the table between you two so that you can talk and clear up misunderstandings and untruth. Isn’t that very helpful in our earthly relationships? It works with Him too. Start an authentic conversation with Him.
Don’t be afraid to express your anger, disappointment, lack of trust, bitterness, or whatever it is that you really feel about Him. He can handle it!
Then give Him a chance to respond back. Friends communicate – back and forth, give and take. Have your say, then listen for what He says back. I know you are probably scared of that, but I promise His response will surprise and delight you to depths you didn’t know existed.
He WILL respond to you! Just listen…. His response will be unique to you. Maybe He fills you with a quiet serene peace that you just can’t understand but you know it’s from Him. Maybe you get the wonderful feeling of being wrapped up in a soft blanket and held close to His heart. Maybe He will give you a Scripture verse that’s just what you needed to hear. Maybe a little bird hops up on your window sill and sings you a song that fills you with joy because you know HE sent that little bird to you.
God speaks in many ways but it will be personal and loving between you and Him. Then respond back to Him. Have a conversation. And then have another and another. You will begin to see that He is not a cosmic cop, but the most wonderful loving Father who is always with you as your Helper and Friend.
“For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
